A day back at school
Our intrepid team from CoolLED recently spent a day at John Hanson Community School in Andover, meeting students at this year’s Careers Fair. It was a chance for pupils to see the range of jobs out there, from public services and further education to local manufacturers like us.
Some came armed with questions about science and engineering. Others came for the free sweets. Both groups left a little wiser about what we do (and also with a CoolLED pen).
Showing science in action
We brought along one of our fluorescence microscope demonstrations, which always looks a bit like magic until you realise it’s just physics doing its thing. Students had the chance to see how light helps scientists explore the invisible world inside cells and how those discoveries can lead to advances in medicine, biology, and beyond.
There was also a fair amount of raised eyebrows when we mentioned that one of our CoolLED light sources was chosen for use on the International Space Station.
Apparently, saying “we make lights for microscopes” sounds much cooler once you add “in space” to the end of it…

Why STEM still matters
With everyone talking about artificial intelligence these days, it’s easy to assume that computers will handle everything for us. But science still relies on curiosity, creativity, and people who know how to ask the right questions – none of which can be automated (yet).
Events like this are a good reminder that STEM careers aren’t just about lab coats and equations. In reality, they’re about solving real-world problems, whether here on Earth or somewhere slightly higher up.
