Welcome to CoolLED, Fraser Watt
We’re pleased to welcome Fraser Watt to CoolLED as our new R&D Engineer.
Fraser joins us with a background that suggests he has spent quite a lot of time persuading light to behave itself. His PhD in medical physics focused on building photoacoustic imaging systems, which use light and sound to produce images of biological tissue. He then moved into a postdoctoral role designing light delivery systems for optogenetics, where accurate illumination is rather important, on account of it being used to control and study neural activity.
From medical physics to applied optics
Before joining CoolLED, Fraser also worked as a Process Engineer, adding further experience in applied optics, manufacturing and technical development. Across his academic and industrial work, he has developed plenty of hands-on experience in optical design, experimental systems and finding practical solutions to problems that, by the sound of it, had gone out of their way to be difficult.
Joining the CoolLED R&D team
At CoolLED, Fraser joins the R&D team as we continue to develop LED illumination systems for fluorescence microscopy, life science imaging and OEM applications. His experience in medical physics, optogenetics and light delivery should make him a very useful addition to a team that already spends a suspicious amount of time discussing wavelengths, beam paths and whether something is behaving as expected.
Away from the optics
Outside of work, Fraser enjoys keeping fit, going to the theatre, seeing live music and travelling. All of which sounds far healthier than spending evenings thinking about beam profiles, so we’ll take that as a good sign.
