Auckland Scientific: a new CoolLED partner with more than 21 years of microscopy experience
We’re pleased to welcome Auckland Scientific as an official CoolLED reseller, bringing the full range of CoolLED LED illumination systems to microscopy customers across the UK.
Based in Bishop Auckland in the North East of England, Auckland Scientific is a family-run microscopy and scientific instrumentation business led by Director Michael Hallewell. Michael brings more than 21 years of experience in the microscopy sector, including previous roles with Nikon and Leica and extensive work with customers in materials science, semiconductor and wafer inspection.
That experience now sits at the heart of Auckland Scientific’s approach: understand the application, look at what the customer already has, and give straightforward advice about what will actually work.
Advice built around the application
Auckland Scientific works across a wide range of microscope brands, supporting customers looking for complete new systems as well as those who want to improve or extend the life of existing equipment.
This broader microscope knowledge is particularly useful when specifying illumination. Choosing an LED light source means considering the complete imaging system, including the microscope, fluorescence filters, fluorophores, camera and application.
As an authorised CoolLED reseller, Auckland Scientific can help customers select and integrate the right CoolLED illumination system for their requirements, with support covering compatibility, configuration, installation, commissioning and user training.
Supporting the move away from mercury and metal halide lamps
The mercury and metal halide lamp phase-out is making it increasingly important for microscopy facilities to understand their current illumination and plan what comes next.
For many laboratories, that doesn’t mean replacing a perfectly good microscope.
If the existing microscope still meets the needs of the application, Auckland Scientific can assess whether its mercury or metal halide illumination can be replaced with a CoolLED LED system. This includes identifying the appropriate light source, wavelengths and adapters, and checking how the new illumination will work with the existing optical setup.
It gives laboratories a practical route towards mercury-free fluorescence microscopy while retaining equipment they already know and trust.
LED illumination can also remove the warm-up periods and frequent bulb replacements associated with traditional lamps, while providing stable, controllable illumination and removing mercury from the microscope light source.
Auckland Scientific’s involvement in the CoolLED No More Mercury campaign means customers can start planning their transition before replacement mercury lamps become increasingly difficult to source.
21 years of experience, with a personal approach
For Michael, the new CoolLED partnership fits closely with how Auckland Scientific already works.
“After 21 years in microscopy, I know how much customers value someone who understands their application and gives them an honest answer. That is the approach we have built Auckland Scientific around.
“Whether someone needs a complete microscope system or simply wants to upgrade the illumination on an instrument they already trust, we want to help them make the right decision and get the best from their equipment.
“Our partnership with CoolLED allows us to combine that experience with specialist LED illumination and practical support throughout the upgrade.”
Whether planning a new microscopy system, improving an existing setup or preparing for the mercury and metal halide lamp phase-out, Auckland Scientific can now provide CoolLED illumination alongside the microscopy experience needed to specify and integrate it correctly.
Planning your move away from mercury?
If your microscope still relies on mercury or metal halide illumination, now is the time to understand your options. The CoolLED No More Mercury campaign provides information and practical support to help laboratories plan their transition to LED.
