Happy Earth Day! This year’s theme is climate action, and it’s an opportunity to stop and consider the challenges we face – but more importantly, the actions we can take. Even small changes add up to make a huge difference!
What action is CoolLED taking?
Being advocates of LED Illumination is what we do! And LED Illumination Systems are the ‘greener’, cleaner alternative to traditional mercury-based illumination for fluorescence microscopy. This is due to:
- Much, much longer lifetimes which cuts down on waste
- 90% less energy consumption saves on electricity
- No toxic mercury!
Our pE-300 Series is even ACT label certified, which is an ‘eco-nutrition label’ for laboratory products, providing scientists with the information necessary to make smart, sustainable purchase decisions.
We’re also building a sustainable workplace culture, especially with our new premises. We have a recycling programme and better facilities to support the many staff who normally walk/run and cycle to work. And it goes without saying we use energy-efficient LED lighting.
How can you help?
Each of us can make more sustainable choices, at home as well as at work. As a provider of sustainable laboratory equipment, it’s our prerogative to advise ditching mercury lamps and switching to a CoolLED Illumination System! This might be easier than you think, as more and more organisations are supporting the move to sustainable equipment. ‘Green grants’ are sometimes available and you can find out more about this in our interview with the University of Bristol Sustainable Labs Officer, Anna Lewis – here.
There are plenty of ways to make your laboratory more sustainable, and the My Green Lab website also provides some though-provoking guidance and useful resources – we definitely recommend taking a look: www.mygreenlab.org.
