Get the most out of your microscope
New advice from Andor and CoolLED on budget-friendly upgrades to enhance your imaging.
As microscopy technology advances, researchers can now reach incredible levels of speed and resolution to answer the most complex biological questions. On the flip side, not all labs have the funds available for a completely new microscope system. A budget-friendly approach to enhancing your imaging capabilities is working with what you’ve got – and thanks to advances in devices such as light sources and cameras, an older microscope is likely to have surprising potential with just a few simple upgrades.
In a new article from Andor and CoolLED, you can find out about the latest options available to revitalise an existing microscope. Whether that is to keep up with the latest technology or adapt the system to imaging needs that have evolved with new research projects, there are many options to explore.
What will you find out?
The article covers many different aspects of the microscope setup, from basic maintenance advice to hardware and software upgrades:
- Perform a microscope ‘health check’ (or ask your local microscope support company for help)
- Upgrade your camera
- Upgrade your microscopy illumination
- Add simultaneous multichannel imaging
- Reconsider your objectives
- Add automation
- Make your microscope super resolution capable
- Add photostimulation
- Delve deeper into your data with image analysis software

Upgrading your microscope light source
We are pleased to contribute towards the third section of this article – upgrading the microscope’s illumination. Microscope light source technology has come a long way since the standard mercury or metal halide lamp, and LED Illumination Systems are now the go-to method. LED illumination offers many benefits in terms of performance, convenience, cost, and the environment. There are also many different Illumination Systems available, with varying numbers of channels, wavelengths, control options (e.g., software, TTL or control pod) and speeds.
