Dr Kyu-Sang Park, Director of Center for Medical Research at Yonsei Wonju Medicine University, Korea, describes how the CoolLED pE-340fura  facilitates his work into understanding mitochondrial stress self defence.

“Mitochondria stress self-defence” refers to a physiological mechanism in which mitochondria increase the inherent protective action against a given stress, thereby improving their function.

Since mitochondrial dysfunction is known to be the main cause of the five major diseases (hypertension, diabetes, obesity, cholesterol and cancer), ratiometric calcium imaging is expected to help identify the molecular mechanisms of this self-defence and find ways to apply them to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

We also expect to utilise these creative mechanisms and make discoveries that can contribute to metabolic improvement, health promotion and life extension.
