Our Journey into LED Illumination
At CoolLED, we pride ourselves on pioneering LED illumination systems that are revolutionising microscopy by replacing traditional mercury bulbs. Our commitment to innovation has driven advancements in both life sciences and industrial applications and, since our team of four introduced the first commercially available LED Illumination System in 2006, we have led the way in transforming LED microscope lighting for fluorescence microscopy and transmitted illumination.
It hasn’t always been easy, however, and the road to success has been filled with its ups and downs but has always been fuelled by a desire to advance science and industry with cutting-edge, solid-state illumination systems that transform optical inspection and imaging research to better people’s lives.
Jake Davies took the reigns in September 2023, following the retirement of our previous Managing Director, and he brought with him a wealth of experience and a strong track record of leadership in technology and engineering.
Since completing his PhD, Jake has spent his career contributing to both the creation of products and global markets for niche business-to-business hi-technology solutions. He joins CoolLED from Emerson, where he was Global Product Marketing Director for Corrosion and Erosion products.
He joined Emerson in 2016 upon their acquisition of Permasense Limited, a specialist pipeline corrosion monitoring company, for which Jake was the first employee, and was instrumental in its growth from start-up to revenues of over $20 million.

Jake was recently interviewed by Antonio Castelo, EPIC’s technology manager for biomedical and lasers, and gives a fantastic insight into the challenges and strategies for transitioning from a large engineering company to the photonics sector; emphasising the importance of adapting products to customer needs and promoting technology adoption.
