We’ve achieved a lot, but it doesn’t stop there and we have several ongoing goals

From major projects to small changes:

By engaging with our customers, we have identified a clear demand for brighter, lighter products that generate less waste and have a reduced carbon footprint. We are committed to developing new products that meet these needs, incorporating features such as enhanced brightness, lightweight designs, minimal packaging using recycled/recyclable materials, as well as efficient delivery processes to decrease CO2 emissions.

In addition, we are investigating key markets with high bulb usage and exploring strategies to replace these hazardous bulbs with innovative LED alternatives. Switching to LEDs from metal halide, Halogen or mercury bulbs can substantially reduce waste. For every bulb switched, significant hazardous waste from mercury is eliminated, leading to reduced environmental impact.

In 2023 and 2024, our customers expressed a preference for us to prioritize TÜV SÜD certification and EcoVadis over ISO 14001. We listened to their feedback and have gained TÜV SÜD certification for our standard products in 2024.

In the same year, we completed an Ecovadis sustainability assessment and are pleased to announce that we were awarded a Bronze medal.

Throughout 2025, we will continue to assess our customers’ needs regarding ISO 14001 while preparing our Management System (MS) for future requirements.

We aim to maintain the reductions achieved in 2023/2024 while also reducing paper by a further 5% by the end of 2025

In 2023, we aimed to reduce paper use by 35% by the end of the year, but achieved a 7.5% decrease in paper use, with a reduction of over half of the paper used for printing.  However, it was identified that we still use paper notebooks, so ran training sessions on electronic notes packages and encourage staff to use these moving forwards.

In 2024, we again aimed for a 35% reduction in paper, and are very happy to report we came closer to our target by achieving a 30% decrease in paper use and, following the training session, a 65% decrease in paper notepad use.  We will review paper usage again at the end of 2025.

Focusing on the four products with the highest impact, we will utilise alternative packaging options to reduce overall mass or increase recycled content.

In 2024, we achieved a 56% reduction of our total impact (in Kg) and are continuing to work with suppliers to identify further sustainable options

We are working hard with all of our suppliers to improve the sustainability of the packaging they use to provide us with their parts.

We are also working closely with a company who, as a leading provider of practical ESG solutions, will support us through all stages of our ESG journey, including the implementation of climate change risk management frameworks, making ESG and climate-related disclosures, compiling all emissions data, advising on net-zero strategies, and much more.  2025 plan, develop roadmap for improving our environmental impact.

We recertified the pE-300 Series and pE-400 Series and will continue to investigate ACT label certification for the pE-800 Series

Reporting now in place which shows our carbon impact.  We now receive an Emissions Report reflecting our business travel every month. The report provides data for our existing travel patterns based on DEFRA guidelines.

A review of carbon off-setting and/or reduction is the next step in 2025.

With our continuing participation in events such as TeenTech and Get Inspired, as well as local school careers fairs, we strengthen our commitment to encouraging young people, especially women, to pursue careers in STEM fields.  We hope to spark curiosity and a passion for science and technology, providing valuable insights and opportunities for students to explore the exciting world of STEM.  In 2024, we took part in:

Get Inspired – Promoting diversity across STEM disciplines is instrumental in expanding access and fostering interest in STEM fields.

Work Experience – We’re proud to welcome a student from a local secondary school each year, giving them the opportunity to gain hands-on experience across every department within CoolLED.

John Hanson Careers Fair – Held at a local secondary school, we highlighted the many and varied roles within a ‘scientific’ company, from admin and business support, to production, engineering, sales and marketing.

In 2025, we aim to attend further STEM events to help inspire young people wanting to pursue careers in STEM fields.

“When I was given the opportunity to become a Mental Health First Aider, I jumped at the chance.  I think it is great that as a company we are now able to provide support and guidance to our colleagues if needed.”Lisa Henley
