Until the last decade, the high-pressure mercury-vapor arc-discharge lamp was standard with xenon as an alternative for quantitative work; it was about this time that LEDs emerged as an option in fluorescence microscopy. LEDs overcame many of the problems associated with arc lamps, including the repeated exchange of bulbs and subsequent alignment, restart times, fluctuations in intensity after start-up, and intensity drop-off over time.
