COOLLED is a venture funded by Custom Interconnect Ltd (www.cil-uk.co.uk) a company that is based in southern England and founded on 18 years experience in designing and manufacturing micro-electronic products.
One of the critical challenges in designing High Powered LED arrays is the ability to remove the heat from the individual LED die. Although LEDs are more efficient than conventional bulbs in producing light, around 80% of the energy applied to LEDs is converted into heat and this must be removed to prevent the devices from overheating that would limit their life. An in-depth knowledge of thermal management in electronic assemblies has been established through involvement in several European Research and Development programs. Working with engineers from Nokia, Thales Avionics, Alcatel Space Systems, Electrovac, Sagem, Smartpac and several European universities, we have gained in depth knowledge of advanced methods of extracting heat from critical components have been investigated and knowledge gained into the use of processes and materials.
Knowledge of optoelectronics has been boosted by a two-year collaborative research program with Southampton University's Optoelectronics Research Centre - reputed to be one of the top five establishments in its field in the world. The program was directed at evaluating methods of creating high powered LED arrays by using un-packaged semiconductor devices (bare die).
Taking products from the design stage into manufacture is simplified by the in-house volume manufacturing capability. Automatic die bonding and wirebonders assemble the arrays of individual LED die on to the thermal structures whose purpose it is to remove the heat and keep the LEDs cool.
