Thermal Management

Thermal control is essential to achieve the optimal performance from the LED products.  Although more efficient than other light sources, LEDs still generate heat which needs to be effectively removed from the devices.  Otherwise, the resulting high temperatures at the junctions of the semiconductors can cause spectral shift and instability which can lead to reduced life times.

Many of CoolLED's designs use active-cooling to ensure that the LEDs are always operating within safe and stable parameters.  Active-cooling also allows devices to be over-driven to improve the intensities while not compromising stability. The use of bare LED die also allows the design of better thermal transfer and reliability compared with conventional packaged LED parts.

Active-cooling can be achieved by various methods: forced air, heat pipe, water cooling or Peltiers. Often a combination is used to ensure efficient heat extraction from the LED die.
